The 2023 1oz Silver Coronation Coin is a specially crafted release from The Royal Mint to mark the historic coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
On the obverse side, the coin features a crowned portrait of King Charles III, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by the King. The reverse, designed by John Bergdahl, showcases the royal cypher of King Charles III, encircled by a laurel wreath, along with the inscription “THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023.” This text, along with the coin’s weight and purity, is also micro-engraved around the rim.
The royal cypher, a personal symbol of King Charles III, combines the initials 'C' and 'R' (for Rex, meaning king) with the number III at its center. Above the cypher is the Tudor crown, an emblem of the British monarchy dating back to the 16th century, which although destroyed in 1649, remains a key symbol in the royal heraldry.
Struck from 999 fine silver, these 2023 Coronation coins have a face value of £2, making them British legal tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax. With a unique design and a limited mintage of only 150,000 coins, they are expected to be a highly sought-after collectible and are unlikely to remain available for long.
